LUXEMBOURG IN FIGURES (STATEC)

The new edition of “Luxembourg in figures” provides a statistical overview of the country and Luxembourg society. The brochure gathers previously unpublished statistical data on the territory and the environment, the population and the labour market, social conditions, businesses and the country’s economy and finances. International comparisons help to situate Luxembourg in relation to the countries of the European Union and the world’s major economies.

ELECTIONS  & VOTING

The latest information for U.S. citizens in Luxembourg on voting in the November 2024 U.S. elections is available on the U.S. Embassy Luxembourg website: https://lu.usembassy.gov/vote-in-u-s-elections/

In Case of Emergency (ICE)

The ICE (In Case of Emergency) program was conceived by a paramedic in May 2005 with the idea to enable emergency response teams (paramedics, firefighters, police officers) to identify people and contact their next of kin to obtain important medical information.

In developed countries, 80% or more of the population carry a mobile phone, and the police or paramedics often use them to identify victims at road traffic accidents or other incidents. The idea behind ICE is that everyone should put an emergency contact name and number into their phone under the heading “ICE”. This gives the emergency service providers a standard place to look.

People are encouraged to enter emergency contact details in their mobile phone book in the following format: 1ICE-husband, 2ICE-mum, 3ICE etc. The number in front of the word ICE keeps the ICE contacts at the top of the list.

Holidays and Observances Around the World

Information about Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.
